Project Purpose

People on the subways are highly isolated from one another despite of the physical constraints that put them together into a shared closed setting (that is the subway car). Our purpose is to transform transit space into a highly networkable and socially charged environment that is enjoyable and appreciated by the commuters. How can technology aid this purpose?

What stirs us

Personal music devices and setting "theme music" to one's day can create isolation in public space. Why do people feel that they cannot socialize on the subway? Is it simply a social construct -- a relic left over from the days of "don't talk to strangers" -- or is it the environment in the surrounding area that discourages contact, and as such promotes an atmosphere of isolation?
